The Country's burgeoning aerospace industry is coming under scrutiny as experts warn of overlooked environmental impacts.
A recent study by the University of Auckland highlights that while the sector is experiencing rapid growth, it may be neglecting crucial sustainability issues.
Dr Priyanka Dhopade, leading the study, points out that the industry prioritises economic growth over environmental responsibility.
"The focus on expansion often overshadows sustainability, despite its potential long-term economic benefits," she says.
The study, titled Sustainability within Aotearoa New Zealand’s Aerospace Sector: Current State and Implications for the Future, calls attention to the 'space sustainability paradox.'
This dilemma questions whether space technology used to monitor Earth’s emissions might also contribute to environmental degradation.
Moreover, the research notes that rocket launches add harmful particles to the atmosphere, threatening the ozone layer.
The study underscores the need for a unified strategy to address these issues, suggesting that New Zealand could lead globally in sustainable aerospace practices.
Despite these challenges, the study highlights the potential for the country to adopt innovative governance models, honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi while mitigating environmental impact.
