MetService Mixed weather expected for Anzac Day across Aotearoa New Zealand as the final week of school holidays begins.
A cool southwest breeze brings some showers to Auckland but plenty of sunshine elsewhere.
Stronger southerly winds and showers move northwards over Marlborough, Wellington, and the eastern North Island.
MetService meteorologist Ngaire Wotherspoon notes overnight showers clearing in Gisborne, with temperatures dropping as a high-pressure ridge settles in.
"Expect lower than average overnight temperatures," she adds, "with the possibility of frost in parts of the South Island."
Tuesday and Wednesday promise clear skies, although a northwesterly flow in the south will bring clouds and showers to the West Coast.
Heavy rain expected over Fiordland on Wednesday night, spreading northwards by ANZAC Day morning.
"Dawn Services in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland should remain dry," Wotherspoon assures, "but expect windy conditions in the capital due to strengthening northwesterlies. Raincoats advisable for early services on the West Coast."
