Armed police respond to 'serious incident' on Auckland's Quay Street

Police have confirmed the incident is contained to a building on Lower Queen Street which is under construction.


What we know so far:


  • Shots were fired in Auckland's CBD and police cordoned off the scene.
  • St John Ambulance has confirmed there are three people with serious injuries and three with moderate injuries.
  • Auckland mayor Wayne Brown says there are injuries to members of the public and a police officer.
  • Brown says there are unconfirmed reports the shooter may be down.
  • Witnesses say eight gunshots were heard.
  • Dozens of police officers armed with rifles are in the area with several major roads closed.
  • Police say the incident is contained to one building, which is under construction.


Police say they have contained a serious incident that unfolded at a construction site in Auckland's CBD this morning.


Acting Superintendent Sunny Patel, Relieving Auckland District Commander, said multiple injuries had been reported and at this stage, they could confirm that two people had died.


The male offender is also deceased.


Prime Minister Chris Hipkins will provide an update on the situation in Auckland's CBD at approximately 10:15am.


He is being briefed at the Beehive. Hipkins was meant to travel to Hamilton today but cancelled those plans.
