In Auckland, the city's demographic advisory panels have presented their key priorities for the next three years to the Mayor and Councillors, highlighting critical focus areas for their respective communities.
These panels, comprising 63 individuals selected for their insights into youth, seniors, Pasifika, ethnic, rainbow identity, and disability experiences, offer strategic advice aimed at fostering inclusivity within the city.
Recently, the co-chairs of these advisory panels articulated their visions to the Planning, Environment, and Parks Committee.
They emphasised critical themes such as housing, wellbeing, climate change, and participation, along with common concerns like engagement, transport, and safety.
For the Seniors Advisory Panel, co-chair Edwina Pio stressed the significance of housing and its connection to safety and wellbeing, particularly for the elderly in the rental market.
The Disability Advisory Panel, led by co-chairs Martine Abel Williamson and Barry de Geest, underlined the importance of universal design principles to ensure inclusion for all.
The Ethnic Communities Panel, represented by co-chairs Krish Naidu and Ireen Rahiman-Manuel, underscored the need for greater inclusivity, aiming to address issues such as bullying and racism affecting ethnic communities.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Peoples Advisory Panel, led by co-chair Seumanu Simon Matāfai, emphasized authentic partnerships between the council and the Pacific community to provide essential support for younger generations.
Inclusive representation and community engagement were highlighted by Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel co-chair Josh Martin, who emphasised the need to amplify voices often overlooked.
Chief Liaison Councillor for the Advisory Panels, Julie Fairey, expressed gratitude for the diverse perspectives provided by these advisory panels, underscoring their essential role in shaping the city's decisions.
Each panel outlined specific strategic topics to progress during their term, focusing on critical aspects such as climate resilience, accessibility, mental health, and civic engagement.
The co-chairs for each panel are set to lead efforts in implementing these strategic initiatives and ensuring a more inclusive and vibrant Auckland for all.
