Coasties may be surprised to learn that Auckland Transport (AT) has spent $455,719 on bike riding lessons, courses, and workshops since FY 2023, according to information released by the Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance through the Local Government Official Information Act.
The Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance spokesperson, Sam Warren, expressed concern over these expenditures, stating, “They certainly are taking us for a ride. Most people wouldn’t dream of asking Auckland Transport for a driving lesson, or how to do an oil change – so why does AT think it’s their job to teach locals to ride bikes or fix chains?”
According to the Alliance, these courses were far from “free” as advertised.
In 2023 alone, $233,784 was spent, with another $221,935 in 2024.
As for 2025, Warren suggests that spending could continue to rise.
The Alliance advises Auckland Transport to reconsider these offerings, especially given the series of rate hikes Aucklanders face in the coming years.
Auckland Transport has not yet responded to these concerns.
