Locals may be affected by a recent Customs arrest involving a 36-year-old Auckland-based businessman.
The individual, scheduled to appear in the Waitakere District Court, faces charges related to importing 133 second-hand vehicles from Japan using allegedly falsified documents.
According to Customs, the investigation began in April 2024 after NZTA raised concerns about incorrect import records.
The probe identified discrepancies in vehicle odometer records, years of manufacture, and gross vehicle mass.
Chief Customs Officer Fraud and Prohibition Nigel Barnes stated, "This investigation identified 133 second-hand vehicles with understated odometer readings and false information. This offending is serious, not just from a border but also consumer fraud perspective."
The businessman faces charges of being knowingly concerned in the importation of prohibited goods, carrying a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment or a $10,000 fine.
Further charges are possible.
NZTA will contact affected owners directly, and there are no immediate safety concerns with these vehicles.
