City Rail Link leader resigns

Dr. Sean Sweeney, Chief Executive of Auckland’s City Rail Link Ltd, has announced his resignation to lead Dublin’s MetroLink project, marking a significant change in leadership for New Zealand's largest transport initiative.

Dr. Sweeney, who led the City Rail Link (CRL) project through various challenges, including supplier collapses and the COVID-19 pandemic, expressed mixed emotions about departing as completion nears.

City Rail Link Ltd Chairman John Bridgman acknowledged Dr. Sweeney's departure with regret but assured stakeholders that project momentum remains strong.

With construction over 80% complete, the project is on track to finish by late next year.

Dr. Sweeney, an experienced engineer with international credentials, returned to New Zealand in 2018 to spearhead CRL, overseeing its critical phases and establishing robust project management.

The transition is expected to be seamless, with efforts underway to identify a successor capable of continuing Dr. Sweeney’s legacy.

His departure in September marks a personal milestone as he reconnects with his Irish heritage through the MetroLink project.
