Consumer NZ reveals expected lifespan of household items

Consumer NZ has unveiled surprising insights into the expected lifespan of common household appliances, providing valuable information for New Zealand consumers.

According to Dr. Paul Smith, Consumer's Head of Test, key appliances should last as follows:

  1. Dishwashers, fridges, and freezers: Approximately a decade.
  2. Ovens: Around 15 years.
  3. TVs: Expect about 8 years of quality viewing.

Smith emphasizes that the initial cost, usage frequency, and maintenance impact the appliance's longevity. Importantly, New Zealanders are protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act, ensuring acceptable quality for personal-use products.

Smith advises against "extended warranties" and "care" programs, noting that consumers often have sufficient protection under the CGA.

Furthermore, the lifespan can vary based on factors like brand and usage intensity.

For example:

  • Dishwashers should last 10 years, but regular cleaning and maintenance can extend their life.
  • Fridges, freezers, and combo models typically last around 11 years.
  • Ovens and stoves can endure approximately 15 years, while microwaves last about 8 years.

Smith recommends repairing appliances until spare parts become scarce, which can help consumers save money.

Consumer NZ also advocates for mandatory repairability labelling to promote longer-lasting products.

This initiative aims to inform consumers about how easy it is to repair appliances, similar to energy efficiency ratings.

Knowing the expected lifespan of household items can assist New Zealanders in making informed purchasing decisions and advocating for their consumer rights under the CGA.
