Cyclone Gabrielle: Water and wastewater updatesCyclone Gabrielle has turned the water in Mangakura Dam dirty.

Watercare is urging customers in Helensville and Parakai, Muriwai and in Wellsford to reduce water use urgently as local water treatment plants continue to be severely impacted by the cyclone.

Watercare advises that everyone elsewhere in Auckland are encouraged to use water wisely.

Our region’s dams and rivers were impacted by the January storm and Cyclone Gabrielle.

The level of turbidity (dirtiness) has risen which makes the water harder to treat.

This means our plants are not able to produce as much water as normal while meeting drinking water standards.

  • Auckland's tap water is safe to drink. You do not need to boil it.
  • Please do not wade or play in floodwaters. Even water that's just 15cm deep can sweep you off your feet, and half a metre of water will carry away most vehicles.
  • If you are concerned about the flooding of drains or roads, please call Auckland Council on (09) 301 0101.

There is enough to meet everyone’s needs, so long as people are mindful of their use.

Please limit your outdoor water use and keep your showers short.
