Dog Rules Adjusted for Nesting BirdsBig Manly and Tindalls Beaches to Trial Change.

Locals walking their dogs at Big Manly or Tindalls Beach this summer might spot new yellow and red markers along the sand.

They’re not random. Each one shows where tiny dotterel and oystercatcher families are nesting, and where special temporary dog rules now apply.

From October to 30 March 2026, Auckland Council is running a two-year pilot to help protect these vulnerable shorebirds during nesting season.

The plan came from Forest & Bird Whangaparāoa Dotterel Minders and Dog Friends Auckland Region, with support from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.

Instead of closing whole beaches, the focus is on education and simple, visible rules.

Dogs must be on-leash within 200 metres of any yellow-marked nest area, and are prohibited in red-marked fenced zones.

The markers shift if chicks begin feeding elsewhere.

Volunteer dotterel minders will help install signs and explain what they mean.

It’s a partnership built on trust, with dog owners keeping a respectful distance and the community helping rare birds thrive.

Forest & Bird’s Derek Kelsey says the shared goal is understanding, not restriction.

“We hope locals get behind this plan and help the dotterels and oystercatchers raise their chicks safely.”

A community information day in October will outline how everyone can play a part in keeping these birds and our beaches safe.
