Electric vehicle sales are edging higher this year, says EVDB, which tracks the Australasian EV market.
In August, 4.4% of new light vehicle registrations in New Zealand were fully electric, just 487 vehicles.
Over 100 of those were electric vans, hinting at growing interest from businesses as well as households.
Across the Tasman, battery EV sales were 20 times higher.
Australia’s population is only 5.3 times bigger, yet its EV market share is double New Zealand’s.
Despite tougher economic conditions, New Zealanders are still buying around 10,000 new vehicles every month.
EVDB says electrified options, from hybrids to plug-in hybrids and full battery EVs, are gradually gaining ground.
For Coasties, that means the odds of spotting more plug-in cars, SUVs and delivery vans on local roads are slowly improving.
And with a steady stream of new models arriving, drivers are being given more choice than ever.
