Expanding footpaths: Community priority supported by targeted rateDairy Flat Highway to Postman Road footpath.

In a bid to enhance accessibility and safety for residents in Rodney, a substantial $23 million investment has been allocated to construct 31 new footpaths across the region.

This progressive initiative, spearheaded by the Rodney Local Board and funded through the Rodney Local Board Transport Targeted Rate, has gained momentum since its initiation in 2020.

Already, eight footpaths have been successfully completed, with four more currently under construction.

An additional 19 footpaths are in various stages of investigation and design, showcasing the dedication of the local board to expand the footpath network and facilitate easier and safer movement for the community.

Brent Bailey, the Chair of the Local Board, emphasised the significance of footpaths in addressing the community's pressing concerns.

“People often tell us about their children who can’t walk to school, that they can’t walk outside their homes and about roads that are getting busier and aren’t safe for pedestrians,” he stated.

The selection of areas for footpath construction is meticulously guided by specific criteria, ensuring optimal benefits for the community.

These criteria encompass busy school routes, heavily used pedestrian pathways, and links to both existing and upcoming developments, effectively extending the pedestrian network.

The funding mechanism, structured through a targeted rate, ensures that revenue collected from each subdivision is solely dedicated to projects within that specific area, enhancing community-driven development.

Monitoring and prudent financial management characterise the entire process, with regular budget reconciliation by Auckland Transport to ensure proportionality across subdivisions.

Better access to the park, especially in anticipation of the upcoming development at Green Road, is a priority for the Dairy Flat community.

A significant allocation of $620,000 has been designated for the creation of a footpath through the park, underscoring the commitment to community well-being and accessible amenities.

With this ongoing momentum, Rodney is steadily progressing towards a more pedestrian-friendly and connected environment.
