In a promising development for Auckland's ferry commuters, Auckland Transport (AT) has secured a partnership with Explore Group to continue operating key ferry routes.
Explore Group, known for its tourism services, will assume responsibility for the Bayswater and Birkenhead / Te Onewa Northcote Point ferry routes, starting October 1.
The previous operator had announced their intention to cease operations this October, raising concerns among commuters. Auckland Transport's Executive General Manager of Public Transport Services, Stacey van der Putten, expressed her enthusiasm for this new partnership.
"We're delighted to welcome Explore Group as a fresh face in public transport, offering reliable services on a regular commuter timetable," she stated.
William Goodfellow, Managing Director of Explore Group, emphasised that this move aligns with their broader tourism offerings in the Hauraki Gulf.
"We saw an opportunity to step in when we learned of the service discontinuation. We've committed a nearly new vessel from our Australian business and are making enhancements to better serve commuters, including increased bike storage and improved accessibility," Goodfellow explained.
The new vessel is expected to arrive later in October.
Councillor Richard Hills praised this development, noting its importance for the Bayswater, Birkenhead, and Northcote communities.
He acknowledged that while service frequency still falls short of expectations, efforts are underway to increase peak-hour services when resources allow.
Councillor Chris Darby highlighted the significance of diversifying operating partners, anticipating improved reliability for ferry users.
Explore Group's extensive experience in ferry tourism in Australia and New Zealand is expected to lay the foundation for overdue improvements in commuter ferry services.
This partnership promises a positive future for Auckland's ferry commuters and underscores the region's commitment to enhancing its public transport network.
However, it's worth noting that there is no word on the Gulf Harbour ferry service at this time.
