Extra hour of sleep as daylight saving ends

Coasties can look forward to an extra hour of sleep tonight as daylight saving time (DST) officially ends at 3:00 am on Sunday, April 7th.

This annual change, which always occurs on the first Sunday in April, marks the transition back to New Zealand Standard Time (NZST).

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed tonight.

While you gain an extra hour of sleep, evenings will get darker slightly earlier.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging residents to use the daylight saving change as a timely reminder to check their smoke alarms.

Make sure to test your smoke alarms this weekend while you're adjusting your clocks.

Working smoke alarms provide precious time to escape a fire in case of an emergency.
