Fireworks Safety Tips for Guy FawkesFireworks safety advice for locals this season.

As Guy Fawkes approaches, Coasties are reminded to celebrate safely and responsibly.

Fireworks will be available for purchase in Auckland from 2 to 5 November 2024, but it’s essential to follow the rules to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities.

In New Zealand, strict regulations govern the sale and use of fireworks.

Only individuals aged 18 and over with valid identification can purchase them.

Councillor Josephine Bartley, chair of Auckland Council’s Regulatory and Community Safety Committee, encourages those using fireworks to consider their neighbours and the community.

“Some Aucklanders enjoy the Guy Fawkes season, but for others it can be an unsettling and worrying time,” said Bartley.

“Please be aware that others, including your neighbours, may not enjoy the sound and sight of them, and pets can also be distressed by them.”

She noted that the Auckland Council supports a ban on the private sale of fireworks.

Here are some vital safety tips for using fireworks:

  • Fireworks can only be discharged on private property.
  • It is illegal to light fireworks on council-controlled land, including parks and beaches.
  • Always maintain a safe distance from fireworks once ignited.
  • Inform neighbours about your plans, and avoid using fireworks after 10 pm.
  • Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Ensure pets are indoors and comfortable during the celebrations to prevent stress.

Elly Waitoa, Auckland Council Animal Management Manager, emphasises the need for pet safety during this period.

“Pets can be extremely sensitive to the sounds and light produced by fireworks. Organise a safe place inside for your pets and pay extra care to them during this time,” she advised.
