Early this morning, locals woke to news of a burglary at Silverdale Mall, with five individuals now in custody following a swift response from Police.
At approximately 4.35 am, Police were alerted to a break-in at the shopping centre where a stolen vehicle was reportedly used to gain entry.
According to Waitematā North Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Carl Fowlie, officers arrived to find the suspects had fled the scene on foot.
“Officers have apprehended the group a short distance away and taken them into custody without incident,” said Senior Sergeant Fowlie.
“Thankfully nobody was injured during this incident, but a lot of damage was done.”
The suspects, aged 12 to 16, have been referred to Youth Aid Services.
Police extended their gratitude to two members of the public who were present at the time and assisted with the investigation.
“We are committed to holding those responsible for property crime to account, but we need the public’s help,” said Senior Sergeant Fowlie.
“We remind the community to be vigilant and ask that if they see anything suspicious to contact us immediately.”
The Police encourage anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour to report it. If it is happening now, call 111.
For non-urgent incidents, contact Police online or by calling 105.
