The Government is initiating swift measures to support New Zealand’s media sector, announced Media and Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith.
Goldsmith outlined several steps, including advancing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill.
“We’re aligning the approach with Australia’s digital bargaining code to provide certainty for all companies,” he said.
This adjustment will allow the Minister to designate which digital platforms are covered, aiming to mitigate unintended consequences.
An independent regulator will be appointed as the bill’s authority.
Despite opposition from ACT, the bill is expected to pass with support from other parties.
Additionally, outdated advertising restrictions for Sundays and public holidays will be lifted.
Eligibility criteria for the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate will also be refined to support local shows, such as Shortland Street.
Goldsmith further noted that NZ On Air will report to Cabinet on supporting local news and current affairs by year-end.
All these measures are set to be implemented by the end of the year.
Broader reforms for a modern regulatory landscape are in progress, with announcements expected later in 2024.
