In a bid to enhance cancer services nationwide, Health Minister Dr Shane Reti unveiled a new mobile breast screening unit in Counties Manukau.
The move underscores the government's commitment to improving cancer services for all New Zealanders.
The mobile clinic, equipped with a mammography machine, IT facilities for image transmission, and an internal waiting area, aims to make breast screening more accessible.
Dr Reti anticipates reaching up to 6,000 women annually, with a particular focus on those under-screened or never screened.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Reti highlighted the significance of taking health services directly into communities.
The mobile unit will collaborate with local community groups, marae, and frequent public spaces like shopping centres to raise awareness and provide support.
"Mobile breast screening clinics are crucial for reaching communities, especially those lacking transport or residing in rural areas," Dr Reti affirmed.
He emphasised the role of such units in the recent age extension announcement and hinted at potential future requirements for more mobile clinics.
Among the government's ongoing cancer initiatives, Dr Reti outlined measures such as a faster cancer treatment health target, increased breast screening eligibility for 70–74 year-olds, and funding for new cancer drugs.
Other initiatives include improved accessibility to PET scanning in the South Island, a new cancer radiotherapy machine in Whangārei Hospital, and expanded cancer infusion services in Whanganui.
Recognising the impact of cancer on New Zealand families, Dr Reti assured the public that addressing wait times for cancer treatment remains a priority.
He expressed determination to lead a vigorous new direction on behalf of a government committed to delivering for all citizens.
Acknowledging the dedication of health staff working on cancer screening and treatment, Dr Reti concluded, "I also want to acknowledge the hard work of our health staff, who work across cancer screening and treatment to help improve health outcomes for cancer patients."
