Hibiscus Coast heritage festival has begunGeologist and author will lead a guided walk to see the folded and broken sea floor strata near Army Bay.

The Auckland Heritage Festival has begun with three interesting events held on the Hibiscus Coast.

Friends of Couldrey House Charitable Trust is presenting an exhibition at Couldrey House at the Wenderholm Regional Park every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday from 1pm-4pm.

Entrance is $5 for adults and free for children under 16 (must be accompanied by an adult).

The Silverdale and Districts Historical Society is presenting a free exhibition at the Silverdale Pioneer Village from 10am-3pm every Saturday and Sunday during the festival.

Geologist and author Bruce Hayward will lead a coastal walk around the shoreline of Army Bay from 2pm-4pm on Sunday, 1 October.

You’ll see some of the most complex and spectacularly deformed young strata in New Zealand, where the cliffs and shore platforms display major faults, and tightly folded, slumped and displaced rocks that were deposited on the floor of the ocean 20 million years ago.

It will be low tide during the relatively easy walk and will return to the starting point.

Interested people can meet at the Army Bay boat ramp car park in Whangaparāoa just before the walk starts.

The walk will go ahead regardless of weather and is presented by the Auckland Geology Club.
