Hibiscus Coast Men's Shed celebrates grand opening of new facility in SilverdaleRay Benfiet and Maurice Browning fixing an outdoor table at the Hibiscus Coast Men's Shed.

In a testament to dedication and community spirit, the long-anticipated Hibiscus Coast Men's Shed has officially opened its doors in Silverdale.

Eight years of unwavering commitment and hard work have brought forth a purpose-built haven for the shed's members, affectionately known as 'sheddies.'

The facility now stands proudly on the hallowed grounds of the former bowling club at Silverdale War Memorial Park.

Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair, Gary Brown, extends his heartfelt congratulations to all involved, recognising the immense effort, fundraising, and community support that paved the way for this achievement.

Brown expressed the board's pride in securing a permanent home for the Men's Shed, acknowledging that the project's realisation was only possible due to the determination of the shed's members and the incredible backing of the local community.

The new facility boasts a custom-designed layout and a spacious interior, capable of accommodating up to 45 'sheddies' at any given time.

President Maurice Browning is elated with the modern setup and deeply grateful for the overwhelming community support, which played a pivotal role in the facility's development.

A substantial sponsorship board within the shed serves as a visible testament to the businesses, organisations, and individuals who contributed to its construction.

The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has invested approximately $118,000 in the project since 2017 through its contestable grants program.

These grants have been instrumental in various aspects of the shed's development, from conducting a feasibility study to outfitting the shed with security cameras and essential tools.

Hibiscus and Bays Deputy Chair Julia Parfitt notes that the expanded floor area is not only a boon for shed members but also a valuable community resource.

The facility provides a forum for members to relax, network, and support community-based projects while enhancing their personal well-being and health.

Former local board member Janet Fitzgerald, who has been involved with the project from its inception, commends the dedicated efforts of trustees past and present.

She believes that the new, larger shed opens the door to a myriad of exciting projects and opportunities.

While the Men's Shed is a place for members to hone their woodworking and metalworking skills, it's more than just a workshop.

It's a place for camaraderie and conversation, where members discuss their issues and find resolutions.

Mental wellness is a significant focus of the Men's Shed, as noted by Fitzgerald, emphasising the positive impact that friendly chats over morning tea can have on personal well-being.

President Browning echoes this sentiment, highlighting the importance of connecting with others in fostering personal well-being.

The spacious lunchroom is a hub for these friendly chats, promoting an atmosphere of friendship and fellowship that is vital to the shed's mission.

The facility is equipped with workshops for woodworking and metalworking, as well as dedicated spaces for hobby work and IT/electronics.

Located at 12 Hibiscus Coast Highway, the Men's Shed is open five mornings a week.

Chairman Brown concludes, "The Men's Shed has a remarkable track record, and its members are always willing to go the extra mile to help others."

The new facility in Silverdale stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to community, personal growth, and well-being.
