Kiwifruit Exports Reach Record HighsGold kiwifruit exports lead the surge.

Good news for New Zealand!

Kiwifruit exports are thriving, with recent figures showing a remarkable increase in value.

According to Stats NZ, the total export value of kiwifruit reached an impressive $3.1 billion for the year ending August 2024, marking a significant rise of $524 million—or 20 percent—compared to the previous year.

“The kiwifruit export values for the season so far are the highest they have ever been,” said Viki Ward, international trade manager.

“The kiwifruit export season is typically from March to November.”

The surge in exports is largely attributed to gold kiwifruit, which saw exports valued at $2.4 billion, an increase of $457 million (24 percent) from August 2023.

This growth was driven by a 23 percent rise in quantity, showcasing the growing demand for this variety.

Green kiwifruit also performed well, with exports valued at $737 million, up $67 million (9.9 percent).

The increase in green kiwifruit values can be attributed to a price rise of 9.0 percent, indicating a healthy market for both kiwifruit varieties.

Typically, gold kiwifruit commands a higher unit price compared to its green counterpart.

Ward noted, “Growers in New Zealand are increasingly planting gold, and now red, kiwifruit, to capture greater export value in markets like China and Japan.”

This shift in planting strategies reflects the growing emphasis on meeting international demand.

China stands as the top destination for gold kiwifruit, while the European Union remains the primary market for green kiwifruit.

These trends highlight the strong export potential, benefiting local growers and contributing positively to the New Zealand economy.

This golden season for kiwifruit not only underscores the resilience of the agricultural sector but also highlights the importance of adapting to global market demands.

As this industry continues to grow, the country encourages consumers to support local produce and engage with initiatives that promote our homegrown products.
