KiwiRail and Auckland Transport announced the next stage of the Rail Network Rebuild today.
The work is necessary to rebuild the ageing foundations across Auckland's rail network, but there are no plans at this time to build the network to the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast.
The Rail Network Rebuild is being done one stage at a time, over the next 3 years.
When the work is complete, Auckland will have a modern and reliable rail network with more frequent services and faster journeys on all-electric trains.
The Rail Network Rebuild is not surface-level work.
KiwiRail will lift the rails and sleepers, replace the foundations, improve drainage, and put the rails and sleepers back down.
KiwiRail investigated a range of options to limit the impact on train users.
However, under the only option that would not take nearly 20 years to complete, the Rail Network Rebuild will require some temporary closures of rail lines and stations.
KiwiRail is currently implementing Stage 2 of the Rail Network Rebuild, which involves the closure of 5 stations on the Eastern Line between Britomart and Ōtāhuhu from 20 March 2023 until January 2024.
