The top 10 dog names in New Zealand have been tallied, and there's not a Rufus to be seen.

Every pet is unique, but there's one name that Kiwi pet owners seem to love equally - Luna, which took the top spot for both cat and dog names.

According to pet data from AA Insurance, the top 10 names this year are Luna, Bella, Coco, Charlie, Molly, Cooper, Poppy, Nala, Milo, and Bear.

Bella is the most popular female dog name in Auckland, with 1539 dogs sharing this name.

Aucklanders love their dogs. Each year we're always delighted to see what the most popular dog names and breeds are and finding out what the region's rarest breeds are, some of which you might never have heard of," Auckland Council's manager of Auckland animal management Elly Waitoa said.

The most popular dog breeds in Auckland were also revealed in Auckland Council's annual report. The most common breed was the Labrador retriever, followed by the Staffordshire bull terrier and the border collie.

Luna is a two-year-old golden retriever who lives on the Hibiscus Coast.
