A man critically injured at Muriwai Beach on Saturday has died in hospital.
The 28-year-old became trapped when a sand dune collapsed, leaving him buried.
Emergency crews airlifted him to Auckland City Hospital, where he remained in critical condition before sadly passing away today.
Police confirmed enquiries will be carried out on behalf of the Coroner.
For many Coasties, the tragedy is a sobering reminder of how unpredictable and dangerous natural environments can be.
With Muriwai just a short drive from the Hibiscus Coast, the accident will likely weigh heavily on locals who regularly enjoy beaches and dunes with their families.
Authorities urge beachgoers to take extra care in sandy areas, particularly around unstable dunes that can shift without warning.
