MetService issues severe Thunderstorm Watch for Northland and AucklandThunderstorms, and heavy rain coming.

MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of Northland and northern Auckland, covering the period from noon to 7 pm on Tuesday, 5th December.

Thunderstorm activity is anticipated in the upper North Island, specifically in slow-moving systems over Northland and northern Auckland (north of the City).

These storms have the potential to bring localised downpours ranging from 25 to 40 mm/hr during the afternoon and early evening.

The intensity of rainfall expected can result in surface and/or flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, or narrow valleys.

Additionally, there is a risk of slips in these regions.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch indicates that conditions are conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms in and around the watch area.

Residents and businesses in these regions are advised to remain vigilant for threatening weather conditions and stay tuned for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
