Auckland included as inspectors dine anonymously now.New Zealand becomes the 49th Michelin Guide destination in mid-2026, with Auckland included, lifting jobs and visitor spend.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said inspectors are already dining anonymously, with first selections and potential star ratings due next year.
“Receiving selection into the Michelin Guide is a prestigious accolade, with its strong international following,” Louise Upston said.
Tourism New Zealand estimates Michelin’s arrival could bring up to 36,000 extra international visitors, supported by research showing “trying local cuisine” is the top interest for people considering a holiday here.
The inaugural edition will cover four destinations: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown.

Upston said the announcement follows a recommendation from the hospitality sector’s 2024 summit and signals government support for growth.
She added that Michelin sees New Zealand as “an exciting gastronomic destination, with exceptional restaurants.”
For the Hibiscus Coast, Auckland’s inclusion puts world-class dining within easy reach, while extra visitor spending is expected to support small businesses and hospitality jobs across the region.
