Kiwis have seen a significant rise in net migration loss to Australia in 2023, with 27,000 more people leaving than arriving, according to provisional estimates from Stats NZ.
This increase is nearly double the loss of 14,600 experienced in 2022.
"The net migration loss from New Zealand to Australia in 2023 was larger than the loss of 14,600 in 2022," said Tehseen Islam, population indicators manager at Stats NZ.
"However, it should be noted that this is below the record loss of 43,700 in the March 2012 year."
Historically, New Zealand has experienced a net migration loss to Australia, averaging about 30,000 annually from 2004 to 2013.
In 2023, the net loss comprised 44,500 departures and 17,500 arrivals.
Additionally, overseas-born New Zealand citizens have increasingly migrated to Australia.
In 2023, 36 percent of New Zealand citizens migrating to Australia were born outside the country, up from an average of 33 percent between 2016 and 2019.
Despite the loss to Australia, New Zealand saw a record net migration gain of 155,800 from the rest of the world, excluding Australia, in 2023.
This gain more than offset the losses across the Tasman.
