Hairdressers and barbers across New Zealand, including those on the Hibiscus Coast, are being encouraged to follow new public health guidance designed to keep clients safer and reduce the spread of infections.
The voluntary guidance, released by the Ministry of Health in July, replaces the Health (Hairdressers) Regulations 1980, which will be revoked on 31 July 2025.
It applies to all hairdressing setups, from high-street salons to mobile, home-based, and pop-up services.
The new advice covers hand hygiene, tool cleaning, handling sharps, ventilation, and spill response.
It recommends washing or sanitising hands between every client, never reusing disposable razors, and disinfecting tools like scissors and combs after each use.
Businesses are also urged to plan for cuts or exposure to blood, and to ensure good airflow, especially where chemicals are used.
For Coasties, this means your next haircut might feel a little cleaner and safer.
Local barbers and stylists now have clear, practical steps they can follow to prevent the spread of illness, whether they're trimming in Silverdale or snipping in Whangaparaoa.
While following the guidance isn’t mandatory, it sets a new benchmark for good practice in the industry.
As always, if in doubt, locals can ask how their stylist is keeping things safe.
It’s a small step that could make a big difference.
