In a collaborative effort between Auckland Transport, NZ Police, and NZ Transport Agency, a total of nine new safety cameras will be installed across Auckland in the coming weeks.

The initiative aims to promote safe driving practices and encourage motorists to adhere to speed limits, ultimately contributing to the ambitious Road to Zero road safety strategy.

Under the vision of achieving zero deaths or serious injuries on New Zealand's roads, the installation of these safety cameras marks the first phase of a comprehensive rollout.

The decision to focus on Auckland stems from the city's high-risk roads that are statistically more prone to accidents resulting in severe harm or fatalities.

Steve Mutton, the Director of Regional Relationships Auckland at NZTA, emphasised the importance of expanding the safety camera network in Auckland to enhance community safety.

He stated that even a slight reduction in speed can significantly impact the outcome of a crash, potentially determining whether individuals involved are harmed or emerge unscathed.

"The cameras will be gradually installed in the upcoming weeks, and we anticipate further expansions later this year," mentioned Mr. Mutton.

Stacey van der Putten, Auckland Transport's Executive General Manager of Safety, expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts among Auckland Transport, NZ Police, and NZTA.

She lauded the safety initiative as a crucial step towards ensuring the well-being of all road users, in conjunction with the implementation of safer speed limits.

The installation process for the new safety cameras began in January, and the groundwork, including the establishment of foundations, power connections, and communications infrastructure, was completed in March.

The cameras will be made operational following a meticulous calibration and certification process.

The newly installed cameras, known as NK-7 cameras, are the same model utilised by the NZ Police for their static/fixed speed camera fleet.

These devices effectively measure the speed of vehicles passing by and identify the specific lane they are travelling in.

Among the locations slated to receive a new camera is the Hibiscus Coast, specifically Dairy Flat Highway.

The speed limit at all camera sites will be set at 80 km/h.

As Auckland welcomes these new safety cameras, it is hoped that they will serve as a reminder for motorists to adhere to safe driving practices and encourage a culture of responsible driving.

By combining technology and public awareness, Auckland's roads can become safer for everyone, inching closer to the vision of zero fatalities and serious injuries.
