The Auckland Council's Long-term Plan 2024-2034 is now open for public consultation, offering Aucklanders a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed options and trade-offs shaping the region's future activities, services, and investments.
The plan, accessible at akhaveyoursay.nz/ourplan takes a fresh approach this year by presenting a central proposal along with options to either do more or do less.
Auckland Council chief executive Phil Wilson emphasises the importance of community input in creating a better, more resilient city.
"We all want a thriving, beautiful city that has recovered from the floods and is more resilient in the future. Our transport and water services are core priorities we need to invest smartly in for long-lasting solutions," says Wilson.
The central proposal involves a $13.4 billion investment by Auckland Transport to enhance public transport and improve its reliability.
Additionally, a new Making Space for Water Programme, backed by over $1 billion of investment, aims to strengthen the city's resilience to flooding, including government co-funding.
Beyond the central proposal, the plan presents options and trade-offs – two additional scenarios allowing residents to consider paying more for more services or paying less for reduced services.
A significant aspect of the plan addresses the region's anticipated population growth, expecting an additional 200,000 people by 2052.
The comprehensive proposal spans various areas, from transport and water management to parks, community development, and economic growth.
The plan proposes establishing an Auckland Future Fund, which would diversify investments to address challenges such as pandemics, extreme weather, and environmental concerns.
This includes transferring council shares in Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) into the fund.
Phil Wilson encourages community engagement, stating, "Your feedback will influence the council's priorities and how we deliver value for rates."
Aucklanders can share their thoughts by visiting akhaveyoursay.nz/ourplan, attending local events, or contacting Auckland Council through various channels, including phone and social media.
The feedback deadline is March 28, with final decisions expected in June 2024.
