If you’re heading out for a drink this month, plan ahead, because Police are stepping up roadside breath testing across the country, and they want every driver to get the message: if you’re drinking, don’t drive.
Increased checkpoints are already underway, and officers say they're out in force in more locations than ever.
You won’t always see them coming, either, mobile units and pop-up breath test stations are part of a deliberate “anywhere, any time” approach.
For those on the Hibiscus Coast, it means extra caution is needed, especially with winter events and shorter days.
Whether you’re heading to a local pub night, a friend’s place in Gulf Harbour, or a dinner in Wainui, Police say you should sort a sober ride home first.
Locals have been reminded that even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment and slow reaction times.
The goal isn’t to catch people out, it’s to save lives.
This heightened focus comes as part of a national campaign to reduce alcohol-related crashes, which still claim too many lives each year.
