In a recent series of incidents, Auckland Police have successfully foiled attempts to circulate counterfeit banknotes, with swift arrests and decisive action taken against those involved.
The community, particularly local businesses, played a crucial role in reporting these fraudulent activities.
The operation unfolded last Thursday when retailers in Warkworth and Ōrewa reported incidents of receiving counterfeit banknotes.
The Waitematā North Area Prevention Manager, Senior Sergeant Roger Small, confirmed that three individuals were apprehended in northern Auckland.
The suspects were found sitting in a parked vehicle in Warkworth, which had been identified as linked to earlier offences.
Small revealed, "Of the five people in the vehicle, three were identified as having allegedly used counterfeit bills."
One occupant was discovered with twelve hundred dollars worth of fake notes concealed in her undergarments.
A 37-year-old man is now facing charges of possessing a forged banknote and using a forged document, with charges pending for two women aged 33 and 25.
Community Vigilance and Police Advice
Police commend the vigilance of the community in reporting incidents promptly.
Authorities urge anyone who receives counterfeit banknotes to report the incident immediately. In case of suspicion, individuals are advised not to accept the note and to contact the police promptly.
Detective Small stressed the importance of businesses being aware of security features within New Zealand banknotes.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand provides clear guides on identifying these features and spotting counterfeit notes, offering a downloadable PDF quick guide on their website.
Police encourage businesses to report incidents with footage and still images whenever possible.
Concerned individuals can contact the Police on 105 or provide anonymous information through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
This successful operation underscores the need for community collaboration and heightened awareness to maintain the integrity of local businesses and the overall safety of the community.
