In a significant development for the Ōrewa community, essential works aimed at strengthening and revitalizing the Ōrewa Community Centre are well underway, with the completion targeted for the end of March.
Constructed in the 1970s and nestled in Ōrewa Square, the community centre serves as a vital hub hosting various activities and housing essential services such as Plunket and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The current project, with a budget of $990,000, encompasses a comprehensive plan to reinforce the building's structure, including the installation of a new roof, emergency lighting, seismic strengthening, new skylights, electrical upgrades, interior painting, and asbestos removal.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair, Gary Brown, emphasised that the extensive programme aligns with building code standards, ensuring the safety and longevity of the Ōrewa Community Centre.

He expressed gratitude for the community's patience during the disruption caused by the ongoing construction and highlighted the ultimate goal of delivering an improved facility that caters to the diverse needs of Ōrewa residents.
Brown remarked, "The centre offers many services and spaces that contribute to a real sense of community in Ōrewa. While the work has caused some disruption to the community and those who use the building, we know that the result will be worth it and thank everyone for their patience as work progresses. We look forward to delivering an improved facility that is fit for purpose and available for the community to use for many more years."
Upon the completion of the Ōrewa Community Centre project, attention will shift to the Ōrewa Library upgrade.
During this phase, library users will have access to a temporary library set up in the community centre's small hall, in addition to a mobile library bus parked outside, ensuring continued library services for the community.
The collective efforts invested in these infrastructure enhancements underscore the commitment to fostering a vibrant and resilient Ōrewa community.
Residents are encouraged to anticipate the improved facilities and the positive impact they will have on community engagement and well-being.
As Ōrewa looks forward to celebrating the reopening of its community centre, the subsequent commencement of the library upgrade reinforces the commitment to providing essential services and spaces that contribute to the community's cohesion and enrichment.
