Coasties heading north can expect State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills to reopen to two-way traffic at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, June 26, following extensive stabilisation work by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
The project, which involved creating a shoulder space and stabilising the hillside, moved 240,000 cubic metres of soil after slips in late April.
This critical work included cutting away large amounts of earth, creating levels in the hillside, and installing piles and retaining walls to prevent future slips.
The closure allowed crews to work around the clock, with over 900 workers involved in the project.
The newly created shoulder space will enable future repairs without lengthy closures, ensuring a more reliable connection for Northland.
When the road reopens, users will see ongoing downslope works, including drainage and anchor installations, expected to continue for two to three months.
A fresh coat of asphalt will be applied between October and December, requiring temporary traffic management.
The NZTA will monitor and maintain the two detour routes used during the closure to keep them in good condition until the Brynderwyn Hills project is fully completed.
