Shark sightings surge: El Niño linked?

As the 'swimming bans' are lifted on the picturesque beaches of Hibiscus Coast, a new concern is surfacing – an uptick in shark sightings.

While the local shores remain unaffected for now, aquatic enthusiasts are being urged to exercise caution as reports from other regions of the country highlight an increase in encounters with these ocean predators.

In the past fortnight, the surge in shark sightings is suspected to be linked to the El Niño climate shift, notably affecting areas like the Coromandel and Tauranga.

Adding to the concern, a bronze whale shark was yesterday spotted at Omaha Beach.

Experts stress the importance of vigilance, urging beachgoers to steer clear of swimming near fishing activities.

Dawn and dusk, notorious feeding times for sharks, should be approached with extra caution.

In case of a shark sighting, the recommended practice is a prompt and quiet exit from the water, ensuring the safety of all beach visitors.
