Stanmore Bay childcare centre forced to close

Parents who have enrolled their children in Kauri Kids childcare centre in Stanmore Bay are forced to look for alternate childcare for their children.

The childcare centre in Brightside Avenue will close at the end of the year due to the lack of funding from the Auckland Council.

The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has enough money to see them, and the centre in neighbouring Browns Bay, through until 22nd December.

As part of its Annual Budget decision-making process, Auckland Council confirmed regional funding for the centres would be cut.

Local Board Chair, Gary Brown, says the local board made the hard decision to close the centre but wanted to give staff and families more time to adjust to the closures.

“We know that the Kauri Kids centres provide essential and treasured service for struggling families, but unfortunately ratepayers were subsidising them to stay open,” he says.

“With our reduced budgets, we’ve managed to find a way to keep the service going until the end of the year and we hope that gives parents adequate time to make new childcare arrangements.”

Kauri Kids in Otara Papatoetoe, Devonport-Takapuna and Manurewa local boards are also closing at the end of the year.
