State of the Nation Report Highlights Social IssuesA recent report by The Salvation Army has highlighted significant social challenges facing New Zealand, with the Hibiscus Coast community not immune to these issues.

The State of the Nation 2025 Report reveals a concerning increase in child poverty, with more children living in households reliant on welfare benefits.

Locals may have noticed a rise in food bank demand, with The Salvation Army distributing over 84,000 food parcels in 2024 – a 40% increase from pre-COVID levels.

The report also highlights a surge in violent crime, despite an overall decline in crime rates.

Additionally, homelessness and housing affordability remain critical issues, with a growing number of households in emergency housing.

Māori communities continue to face significant disparities in life outcomes, including higher rates of imprisonment and violent crime victimisation.

The report emphasises the need for urgent action to address these challenges, calling for community, business, and government collaboration to improve social outcomes and uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Dr Bonnie Robinson, Director of The Salvation Army Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit, stresses the importance of collective action: "Given the direction our social measures are taking, we urgently need to draw on experts, research, and lived experience about what works to create a society where people flourish."
