The latest on Tropical Cyclone GabrielleTropical Cyclone Gabrielle forecast to approach the country early next week.

Severe tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes or typhoons, are powerful storms that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life.

Formed over warm tropical waters, these storms can rapidly intensify and bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges to coastal communities.

The destructive power of severe tropical cyclones is due to a combination of factors, including the strength of the winds, the amount of rainfall, and the height of the storm surges.

Wind speeds in these storms can reach over 300 km/h, causing widespread damage to buildings, and infrastructure.

One of the most dangerous aspects of severe tropical cyclones is the storm surge.

As the storm approaches the coast, the winds can push water ahead of the storm, leading to a rise in sea level.

This can cause massive coastal flooding, inundating low-lying areas and causing widespread damage.

The impact of severe tropical cyclones on communities is a stark reminder of the destructive power of nature.

Preparedness is vital in reducing the risk of loss of life and property.

Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is located in the Coral Sea and is expected to move southeast towards New Zealand in the coming days.

The MetService says Gabrielle is expected to bring some areas 24-hour rain totals of 300mm or more.

Any rain over 6mm per hour is classed as heavy.

The MetService warning criteria is 100mm in 24 hours over a widespread area. 24 hours of steady heavy rain gives 144mm.

Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to approach New Zealand from the north on Sunday and may lie close to Northland by late Monday and move towards the eastern part of the North Island on Tuesday.

The severity of the weather and the areas affected is highly dependent on the track of Cyclone Gabrielle.
