Top tips for a safe Guy Fawkes season

As the skies light up with fireworks in anticipation of Guy Fawkes, it's essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all.

Auckland Council has provided valuable tips to make this season a pleasant experience for everyone.

Fireworks are only available for purchase from November 2 to November 5, 2023.

To buy them, you must be 18 years old with valid identification.

Councillor Josephine Bartley, chair of Auckland Council's Regulatory and Community Safety Committee, reminds us that while many enjoy Guy Fawkes season, some find it unsettling.

She urges Aucklanders to use fireworks safely and considerately.

Remember, fireworks can only be used on private property, not in parks, beaches, or council-controlled land.

Lighting fireworks in forests, conservation areas, or on streets, berms, and footpaths is prohibited.

Safety is paramount.

Keep a safe distance once fireworks are lit, inform your neighbours, and avoid using fireworks after 10 pm.

Always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby and follow handling instructions meticulously.

Don't light fireworks in windy or dry conditions, and never aim them at people, animals, or property.

Having a responsible adult present is essential, and pets should be kept inside or moved to avoid distress.

In rural areas, bonfires are allowed during the designated period, but ensure they are extinguished before nightfall.

Additionally, remember that sky lanterns can be a fire risk if left unsecured.

Don't store fireworks for later use; it's safer to dispose of them.

Elly Waitoa, Auckland Council Animal Management Manager, advises being extra mindful of pets during Guy Fawkes.

Close windows, doors, and curtains to reduce the impact of fireworks on them.

If you can't be with your pets, ensure they are safe and confined.

Remember, responsible pet ownership, including registration and microchipping, can help ensure a swift reunion if your dog strays during the celebrations.

Guy Fawkes can be a wonderful time for all when celebrated safely and considerately.

Let's make it a memorable and enjoyable experience for our community.
