In a continuation of its decade-long smart energy collaboration, Vector Lights, a partnership between Vector, Auckland Council, and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, is gearing up to launch two enthralling light shows on the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 2024.
As part of the Auckland Anniversary celebrations, Vector Lights will showcase a new spectacle crafted by toi Māori artist Hokimai-anahera Rosieur (Ngāti Manuhiri, Ngāpuhi, and Te Aupōuri) in collaboration with sound engineer Tawhirimatea Rosieur (Ngāti Manuhiri, Ngāpuhi, and Te Aupōuri).
The show promises to transform the cityscape into a mesmerizing visual experience for both Aucklanders and visitors.
For the commemoration of Waitangi Day, Vector Lights, in collaboration with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, will present a new show inspired by the waiata ‘Maunga’ by Majic Pāora and Robbie Pāora.
Waitematā Local Board Chair Genevieve Sage expressed her excitement for the upcoming shows, emphasizing the iconic status of the Auckland Harbour Bridge as a canvas for the Vector Lights presentations.
She encourages everyone to gather at Silo Park for the optimal viewing experience of these two new sound and light displays.
Sarah Williams, Vector’s Chief People and Communication Officer, acknowledged the significance of both shows in celebrating important regional occasions.
She expressed pride in the collaboration with local artists and iwi, highlighting the valued contribution they bring to narrating local stories in innovative ways.
The Auckland Anniversary light and sound show, masterfully curated by renowned local artist Hokimai-anahera Rosieur, unfolds with the sounds of the ocean, paying homage to Waitematā.
Traditional instruments intricately weave together to depict the gentle breeze, the vastness of the ocean, and the vibrant sea and bird life, creating a serene ambience.
A karanga resonates with the pepeha/landmarks of Tāmaki through subtle echoes, and the creaking sails evoke the Herald ship entering Waitematā Harbour, symbolized by a tolling bell signifying a time of change.
Following a moment of silence, the guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument, delicately enters, blending with drums and instruments from diverse cultures, mirroring the rich cultural tapestry of Tāmaki Makaurau.
The Auckland Anniversary Day show is scheduled to run every 15 minutes from Tuesday, January 23, to Monday, January 29, between 9 pm and midnight.
This will be followed by the Waitangi Day show, playing every 15 minutes from Thursday, February 1, to Monday, February 6, within the same time frame.
The audio for both shows can be accessed at www.vector.co.nz/lights.
However, it's essential to note that due to critical maintenance work by NZTA, some lights on the east side of the Auckland Harbour Bridge overarch may be affected.
The completion of this maintenance work is expected by March 31, 2024.
