After a night of stormy weather, and lost power, emergency services have been responding to reports of flooding in Puhoi.

At 2.07 am fire and emergency crews were dispatched to reports of a car trapped in floodwater in the area.

People in the area reported that the water had receded by 7.30 am.

Locals have shared videos of major flooding in the early hours of this morning on social media.

There were 261 lightning strikes in the Auckland region in the previous 24 hours, up until Tuesday morning.

MetService has warned New Zealanders to prepare for the "coldest week of the year," with subzero temperatures and more heavy rain expected.
