AT wants a new bus terminal in WhangaparaoaA new bus terminal is being proposed in Whangaparaoa.

A new bus terminal is being proposed in Whangaparaoa to make it easier for public transport commuters to get onto the peninsula once Penlink opens.

Auckland Transport (AT) has plans to build the terminal at a busy intersection where Penlink will intersect.

Buses will use Penlink when it opens in 2026, and the terminal will mean people can quickly and easily transfer between the NX2, local buses, or the Whangaparaoa town centre. This will also cut off about 20 minutes of drive time for them.

AT is currently working on an initial concept design and early cost estimates so they can apply for funding from Auckland Council and Waka Kotahi to build the terminal. The proposed terminal will be located at the intersection of Whangaparāoa Road/O Mahurangi Penlink/Beverley Road.

There has been an influx of people moving to the Hibiscus Coast and the number is set to rise from 55 000 to 150 000 in the next 30 years. AT wants to support the growth by providing a sustainable, safe, and reliable transport option on the Whangaparaoa peninsula.

“We expect the extended NX2 and bus terminal to deliver more reliable and accessible rapid public transport services for nearly 5000 people, saving up to 20 minutes per trip compared with current bus routes,” said a spokesperson from Auckland Transport.

Besides providing a cost-effective and reliable rapid public transport between the peninsula and the surrounding areas, other benefits include increasing access to work, education, and recreation opportunities; reducing the risk of road deaths and serious injuries as buses are one of the safest ways to travel; helping people contribute to New Zealand’s climate change reduction efforts by providing an effective and reliable alternative to traveling by car, and supporting local businesses by making it easy for people to visit and enjoy the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
