Targeted support boosts opportunities for local youthMatt Doocey is the Minister for Mental Health, Minister for ACC, Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Minister for Youth, Associate Minister of Health, and Associate Minister of Transport.

The Ministry of Youth Development unveiled a significant initiative to bolster support for young individuals in our community.

Youth Minister Matt Doocey highlights that over 6700 young people will benefit from targeted youth development aid, promoting educational continuity and enhancing overall well-being.

A substantial funding injection of $10.69 million will be channelled to 34 community-based youth sector providers across the nation.

These organisations will spearhead prevention and early intervention programmes, meticulously tailored to cater to the unique needs of young individuals.

The Ākonga Youth Development Community Fund (Ākonga Fund) has committed $9.702 million to 31 community-based youth development providers for the years 2024 and 2025.

Notably, this funding prioritises regions affected by flooding and severe weather events in early 2023, with 53 per cent, amounting to $5.091 million, allocated to these areas.

The Mental Wellbeing Support for Vulnerable Young People Fund has also played a pivotal role, with $788,000 allocated over two years.

This funding will ensure that at least 1000 vulnerable young people, aged 12 to 24 years, receive crucial early support, preventing the escalation of mental health and wellbeing issues.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by young people, especially heightened levels of anxiety and stress in recent years, Minister Doocey emphasises that this funding aims to empower them in overcoming these hurdles.

Moreover, the Upskilling Young Kaimahi Fund, part of the Ministry of Youth Development's initiatives, is actively supporting up to 200 young people, aged 16 to 24 years, in enhancing their skills in youth development and mentoring.

Minister Doocey concludes, stating, "With the escalating cost of living impacting the lives of many young New Zealanders, the government is committed to lifting skills, education, and overall well-being. This initiative is geared towards providing our young people with enhanced opportunities and a brighter future."
