Digital front door promises easier local support.Coasties will soon get clearer mental health support options through a new AI navigation platform funded by the Government.
Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey says funding to Whakarongorau will help people see what services are available in their area and, in some cases, book with providers directly.
Online tools on the platform will support earlier intervention so problems are less likely to escalate.
“Not knowing where to go or who to talk to has been reported as the reason for unmet mental health needs in one third of children and more than a quarter of adults,” Mr Doocey says.
The new tool is designed to remove those barriers and guide people to the right support.
The platform will bring together tele-health services and in-person options, including mental health practitioners in GP practices and Gumboot Friday counsellors, making it clear support is available wherever people live in New Zealand.
A digital front door will help triage and direct people on where to go and what to do.
Mr Doocey says the current system is too fragmented and that many people would be surprised by how much support already exists.
Backing a sector-led solution like this AI platform is part of a wider focus on faster access to help, more frontline workers, better crisis responses, and 24/7 digital tools for those reaching out.
