AT fare changes coming May 1stImportant update for young travellers.

From May 1st, 2024, there will be changes to public transport fares for children and young people.

These changes come after the government decided to stop funding some concession programs.

Here's a breakdown of what you need to know

Free weekday travel for children aged 5 to 12 will end.

They will now pay child fares, which are still at least 40% cheaper than adult fares.

Weekend travel remains free for children under 13 with a registered AT HOP card.

Half-price fares for teenagers aged 13 to 24 are ending.

However, there are still concession options available depending on your situation.

What about my child's AT HOP card?

Children under 5 don't need their own card.

For children aged 5 to 15, make sure their AT HOP card is registered with the correct date of birth to qualify for free weekend travel.

Top up your child's card before May 1st to ensure they have enough funds for travel.

Secondary school students and young adults

Students aged 16 to 19 with a registered secondary concession will still get a reduced fare.

Young adults aged 16 to 24 may be eligible for concessions if they hold a Community Services card, Total Mobility card, Blind Low Vision NZ card, or are a full-time tertiary student.

Apply for a tertiary concession before May 1st to ensure you get the cheapest fare.

What if I don't qualify for a concession?

Adult fares will apply from May 1st, but you can still travel off-peak for a 10% discount.

Off-peak hours are generally before 6am, between 9am and 3pm, after 6:30pm on weekdays, and all day on weekends and public holidays.
