Coasties Warned About DIY Solar Installation RisksHomeowners Urged to Hire Registered Electricians

With increasing concerns over the energy crisis, some Coasties might be considering installing photovoltaic (PV) solar systems to cut down on electricity costs.

While the appeal of DIY solar installations is growing, WorkSafe New Zealand has issued a clear warning: homeowners should exercise caution and seek professional help.

PV systems, which are gaining popularity across the country, include both grid-connected and stand-alone options.

However, the installation of these systems involves intricate electrical work, and without the proper knowledge, DIY installations can lead to severe risks, including fires and electric shocks.

WorkSafe strongly recommends that any installation involving voltages exceeding 50V AC or 120V ripple-free DC should be handled by a registered electrician.

Additionally, if any part of the PV system includes 230V terminations, a qualified professional is required by law to complete the installation.

Homeowners should also be aware that New Zealand's ECP51, a code of practice covering domestic electrical wiring, does not extend to PV systems.

This limitation further underscores the importance of engaging a registered electrician for such projects.

For those considering PV systems with battery storage, careful attention should be paid to installation methods and the placement of batteries.

Improper installation could lead to the release of flammable gases, increasing the risk of injury and property damage.

There are distinct standards for grid-connected and stand-alone PV systems.

The standards for grid-connected systems include AS/NZS 5033 for PV panels, AS 4777.1 for inverters, and AS/NZS 5139 for battery installations.

For stand-alone systems, AS/NZS 4509 is the relevant standard.

WorkSafe also advises that anyone experiencing issues with their PV system should immediately turn it off and contact their electrician for assistance.
