Auckland Council has sought reimbursement of over $200,000 for the disposing of the fire that engulfed the club.
This resulted from two fires that occurred sequentially in May this year, which had engulfed the abandoned building.
This is to compensate for the engineering and demolition purposes required to control and extinguish the fire.
At its peak, more than 50 fire personnel had been called, and 17 fire trucks were on the scene, redirected from various areas of Auckland.
Council Chief Executive Phil Wilson had written to the course owner, Gregory Olliver, seeking payment for the expenses.
Wilson’s letter reiterated support for community expectations, reassuring that community voices would be heard in the lead-up to decisions targeting the rezoning of land.
The Council’s invoice for payment puts further pressure on the land’s future.
Decisions since to sell parts of the 90-hectare course, which the club sits on in 2023, have drawn large-scale public disapproval.
Olliver, a property developer, had initially purchased the property in 2021.
The fire followed shortly after the club closed abruptly when the country club was deemed unprofitable.
