Countdown to SailGP in AucklandGlobal Sailing Teams Compete in Auckland

Aucklanders are gearing up for an exhilarating weekend as SailGP returns to Auckland on 18 January, bringing world-class sailing action to the Waitematā Harbour.

The SailGP championship, founded in 2018 by Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison, features elite national teams competing in identical F50 foiling catamarans.

These cutting-edge vessels can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, offering spectators an adrenaline-filled experience.

Twelve teams representing countries including New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and Great Britain will compete for a share of the USD $12.8 million prize pool.

The season champion will take home USD $2 million.

The two-day event includes:

Day One (Saturday, 18 January): Three fleet races from 4 pm to 5.30 pm.

Day Two (Sunday, 19 January): Two fleet races and a match race final from 4 pm to 5.30 pm.

Gates at the SailGP Race Stadium will open at 1.30 pm on both days, offering ample opportunity to enjoy local food, beverages, and harbour views before the races begin.

With training sessions already underway, anticipation is high as the world’s best sailors prepare to battle it out.

Whether choosing tickets for an up-close view or staking out a natural vantage point along the waterfront, spectators are promised an unforgettable spectacle.
