The Orewa Surf Life Saving Club (OSLSC) has one mission this summer - to protect the community in and around the water.
Although summer has kicked off with an ex-tropical cyclone Lola, lifeguards on Orewa beach started patrolling the beaches on Labour weekend and will do so until the end of the Easter weekend.
The volunteer lifeguards are proud to wear their uniform while patrolling Orewa beach every weekend over the summer, and Wenderholm Regional Park during the peak periods.
“The presence of the lifeguards provides reassurance to those using the beach,” says OSLSC chair membership committee and board member, Renée Beckett. “They are responsible for a number of rescues and preventative actions each year.”
Those from the age of 13 who are keen to help save lives are urged to sign up to become a rookie lifeguard member.
“One of the requirements is that you must be able to swim 400m freestyle in under 9 minutes,” says Renée.

You will need a wetsuit, togs, goggles and swim fins.
Volunteer Surf Lifeguards patrol on weekends and public holidays during the summer season, with the purpose of preventing loss of life and harm on patrolled beaches.
Volunteering as a Surf Lifeguard is both fun and rewarding - you’ll make a real difference in people’s lives and have a great time along the way.
