Hibiscus Coast Fishers Check RulesOne app, fewer fines, safer summer trips.

Hibiscus Coast locals heading out fishing this summer are being urged to download the free NZ Fishing Rules app.

Fisheries New Zealand says the app puts key rules in one place, so people can check what applies before they drop a line or gather shellfish.

“You wouldn’t go fishing without your rod, hooks or other gear, so make sure you have the app on your phone too,” says Steve Ham, Fisheries New Zealand director of fisheries compliance.

The app includes daily bag limits, minimum legal sizes, closures, gear restrictions, and biotoxin alerts.

Ham says rules vary by species and area and can change, so people should stay up to date.

He also says the app will work once downloaded, even in places with no cellphone coverage.

Recreational fishers are also encouraged to speak with a local fishery officer or visit a local office.

Fishery officers and honorary fishery officers will be patrolling coasts, boat ramps, and at sea over summer.

Ham says they are there to help, and to avoid people “hook[ing] a fine”.

MPI is also asking people to report suspected illegal activity to 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476 224).
